Measure E passes by wide margin

Measure E passes by wide margin

In a landmark decision, voters have overwhelmingly approved a measure aimed at bolstering funding for schools in Alameda, CA. Measure E’s passing marks a significant victory for education advocates and underscores the community’s commitment to investing in the future of its children.

Measure E garnered strong support from voters during the recent elections, with 76.1% of ballots cast in favor of the initiative. The measure promises to address critical funding gaps in the education system within AUSD, providing much-needed resources to improve school facilities, enhance educational programs, and support educators.

One of the key provisions of the measure is the allocation of funds towards upgrading school infrastructure and facilities generally through bonds. Over the years, many Alameda schools have faced deteriorating buildings, outdated technology, and inadequate resources, hindering the learning experience for students. With the passage of this measure, schools will receive the necessary funding to contnue to modernize their facilities, creating safe, conducive learning environments that promote student success.

Measure E will benefit the sports and extracurricular activities that will be utilizing the facilities that are set to be remodeled. The additional funds will help improve the beauty of the school campus. Benefits would be the Encinal community having facilities that can compete with neighboring schools that have state of the art facilities, which draws potential students/athletes to their schools,” said Encinal Athletic Director Juanita Lyons.

After graduation, Willie Stargell Field will undergo renovations, including the addition of turf and a new track. Currently, Encinal and Alameda are the only two schools in their leagues to still use grass fields.

Moreover, the measure seeks to expand access to high-quality educational programs and services for all students. This includes investing in programs that support student achievement, such as STEM education, arts and music, career and technical education, and special education services. By providing students with a well-rounded education, the measure aims to prepare them for success in an increasingly competitive and rapidly evolving world.

“The passing of Measure E seems to be a good thing for the school given it does not directly impact personal finances, and takes money from average folk like me,” Junior Elston Li stated.

Crucially, the measure also prioritizes supporting educators and staff who play a vital role in shaping the lives of our youth. This includes allocating funds for competitive salaries, professional development opportunities, and resources to help educators succeed in their roles.

“This is an historic margin for a parcel tax in Alameda, and as a Board we are so very grateful to the voters for their support,” says AUSD Board President Jennifer Williams. “We truly believe that our schools are the heart of our city, and we appreciate the community’s trust as we continue our very best to support the students, families, and staff that make up AUSD.”

The passage of this measure reflects a shared commitment among Alameda voters to prioritize education and invest in the future of our children. It demonstrates an understanding of the critical role that schools play in shaping the trajectory of individuals’ lives and the prosperity of our community as a whole. By providing adequate funding for schools, we are not only investing in the next generation but also laying the foundation for a brighter and more prosperous future for all.

“The measure had overwhelming support which generally helps me and the school promote a more equitable and expansive curriculum and more lasting benefits for the school that keeps us in the competition,” said Encinal Principal Kirstin Snyder.

As the community moves forward, it will be essential to ensure transparent and accountable stewardship of the funds allocated through this measure. Community input and oversight will be critical in ensuring that resources are used effectively and equitably to benefit students across our district. Together, we can continue to build a stronger, more vibrant education system that empowers students to reach their full potential and achieve their dreams.

The new measure goes into effect on July 1, 2025.
