There are many historic landmarks on the island of Alameda, but the most historic one now shares the namesake of a restaurant. Neptune’s is a restaurant on Central ave, near Crab cove that has a namesake of an amusement park that was located in alameda around the 1930’s. Dubbed “The Coney Island of the West” by The East bay National Park Service, the park offered many games, attractions and swimming pools. Sadly, it closed due to the Great Depression as tourist numbers dwindled. Though the park was closed, its memory lives on in relics from the park, and the tasty food this restaurant offers. Neptune’s offers breakfast and lunch, and takeout options on Saturdays and Sundays. I will be reviewing three items from the breakfast and lunch take out menu to see if you should try the food at this historic restaurant.
Breakfast:
For starters I asked the cashier what the two most popular items were from breakfast and lunch. The cashier was very nice and recommended four items for me to buy; here are the first two.
Neptune’s Breakfast Burrito with Bacon was the 1st thing I got. It was very tasty and had a good savory flavor. Sadly, the bacon didn’t show itself till around the middle of the burrito, along with delicious melted cheese and some surprise sweet potatoes as well. Overall, I enjoyed the burrito and even found myself slightly liking the sweet potato, a dish I don’t normally like. However, the bacon was not present for the first bites and took a little too long to reveal the dish’s good flavors. I would give this a solid 8.5/10.(Bonus: The burrito also came with tater tots which had a very wonderful salty flavor. Even though they cooled really fast, they were still a very good side dish. I would give this side dish a good 9/10)
Fried chicken waffles were the next item I had for breakfast. It was a pretty simple dish, and the waffles cooled quickly as well, but it wasn’t a terrible dish. The waffles were simple but good and the maple syrup that went with it was excellent. The chicken was well done but sadly wasn’t what I had hoped for. The chicken thigh was soggy and condensation ridden and the wing’s bones were really hard to separate. I wanted to enjoy this dish more but I did not. However, I personally don’t like fried chicken that much so this may just be a me thing. Overall I would give this dish a 6.9/10. While I didn’t like the chicken as much, the waffles were fine, but you had to eat them with the amazing maple syrup to enjoy them fully.
Lunch:
The first dish I got from the lunch menu was the Wagyu Loco Moco. The egg was well cooked and was a great pairing with the rice and wagyu. I thought that wagyu sauce was a little weird looking, but tasted very nice and a little sweet. Overall the dish was an excellent combination of flavors, and even though it may not look the most appetizing, it was a very tasty dish. I would give this item a solid 9/10.
The last dish I got was the Fried Chicken Silog. The rice and egg were good as expected and the fried chicken was the same kind as the ones in the waffle dish but I liked it a lot better because there was less condensation on it. The dish was very nice and savory, the egg was excellent and the fried chicken wasn’t bad, although I still don’t like it as much as I liked the rice. Also the pickled veggies on the side weren’t a bad touch either. Overall though I would rate this dish a good 8/10.
Drink:
For my drink I got the Black Cherry soda that they don’t make there but they sell it there. It was very good and maybe too sweet for some but overall very nice. I would give this drink a 9/10.
In conclusion, I would give this restaurant a 8.5/10. While I haven’t eaten all of the dishes, I would say with certainty that this is a good restaurant. If you are in the mood for a homely, tasty and well done meal to take out, then this is the restaurant for you.
